Updates and announcements

Can you believe it is the last week of school! This year has absolutely flown by.

If you would like summer enrichment packets, please let me know. I am preparing those for students whose parents request them. Additionally, if you are interested in summer tutoring, please email me before the last day of school. I do not check my email regularly during the summer.


Our week in learning

Students have learned all of the idioms in our curriculum! We may use this time to catch up on some that we missed.

The final roots test of the year will be on Wednesday, May 22nd.

In Literature, we will present all of the Across Five Aprils newspaper projects.

In Grammar, we will be working on reading segments from “A Wrinkle in Time”, followed by Touchstones-like discussions. This will not have any homework.


On Monday, students will be assessed on their knowledge of the nervous system. This will be a partially open study guide science test. Tuesday, we will play science Bingo to review topics from previous units.

This week in History, students will finish learning about the conflicts that arose between Native Americans and European settlers in North America. Students will learn that though promises of peace and comradery were made, they were broken, and tensions rose to the point of battles, massacres and war. They will learn that part of the mentality of those from European descent was to assimilate the Natives to their ideologies and customs.

In math, we will then move into a very short crash course in the basics of Algebra! There will be no math groups this week.

Updates and announcements

Thank you all for the wonderful gifts and notes of appreciation last week! I was so grateful and my heart is full.

We have an exciting two weeks coming up! Our Capitol field trip is on 5/15, the summer birthday celebration is on 5/17, the 5th Grade Promotion Ceremony is on 5/22, and the last day of school is on 5/24!

Fifth Grade Promotion is coming up quickly! The event is on Wednesday, May 22nd at 5:30 pm in the gym. Students should be in their seats by 5:20. Students should dress in nice clothes that one might wear to a wedding or church service. Uniform guidelines still apply for length of skirts, etc.

The tall tales turned out beautifully last week! I hope you enjoyed reading them as much as I did.

Our week in learning

Students have learned all of the idioms in our curriculum! We may use this time to catch up on some that we missed.

The roots study guide for #76-100 is due on Wednesday, May 15th. The test will be on Wednesday, May 22nd.

Students will recite the poem “A Bird Came Down the Walk” during the week of 5/13.

In Literature, we will give class time for students to work on their Across Five Aprils newspaper. Please refer to their packet with the calendar of due dates for more information.

In Grammar, we will be working on reading segments from “A Wrinkle in Time”, followed by Touchstones-like discussions. This will not have any homework.

This week in science, students will finish their brief study of the nervous system. We will continue our study of neurons, and then learn about the major parts of the brain as well as their function Students should expect to fill out a small portion of the study each night until Wednesday. On Thursday, we will review the study guide as a class in preparation for Friday’s test. Because this is such a quick unit, students will be allowed to use their study guide for the last 15 minutes of the test.

This week in History, students will begin their final unit for the year, on the Cultures and Conflicts of Native Americans from before settlers came to North America to the end of the 19th century. The first half of this unit will be studied and taught this week by the students, in the form of a group project and presentation. The class will be split into groups of 7, and given three days to prepare a presentation on one of four chapters. Presentations will occur on Friday. All work should be able to be completed during class time.

In math, we will review on Monday, then take the annual Singapore assessment on Tuesday and Thursday. We will then move into a very short crash course in the basics of Algebra! There will be no math groups this week.

Updates and announcements

We are in the home stretch of the school year and looking towards our final assessments of the year! Students are enjoying more creative assignments. The goal is to keep the activities full of rigor and tap into their creative juices while curbing their excitement for the school year to be over. This is especially true in fifth grade because they are so excited to move on to middle school.

This week, I will be out on Wednesday for Paul’s Doctoral graduation!

The Prep Tour is this Friday. Students will eat their lunches with the prep students after their tour is over. School lunches will be delivered to the prep side.

Next week is the Capitol Field Trip!

Be on the lookout for Promotion night information. It will be on Wednesday, May 22nd.

Students will learn about the roots orthos and dokein. There will be a routine roots quiz over these next week. The study guide for roots 76-100 will be passed out on Wednesday and due on 5/15.

In Literature, we will give class time for students to work on their Across Five Aprils newspaper. Please refer to their packet with the calendar of due dates for more information.

In Grammar, we will be working through the rest of the Tall Tales unit. Students will peer and self edit, create a dedication page, and write their final drafts with accompanying illustrations. We will have an Author’s Tea on Friday after the Prep Tour on Friday where students will read their Tall Tales to their peers while enjoying cookies and lemonade. Please note that only students who have completed the assignment will participate in this fun event.


We are nearing our end of our anatomy studies! Students will take their endocrine system test Monday, and begin their study of the nervous system on Tuesday. This will be a quick unit; study guides for the nervous system will be passed out Thursday, and will be due the 16th. The nervous system test will be the 17th.

This week in History, students will be tested on their knowledge of Unit 11: Westward Expansion After the Civil War. Study guides are due on Tuesday, when we will have a review day, and the test will be Wednesday. Students will work on advertisement projects on Monday, and present their projects on Thursday. This project will be given two days in class (last Friday included), and does not need to be taken though, though some students may opt to do this.

In math, we will continue a unit on angles. This week, students will be finding the unknown angles in parallelograms and trapezoids and taking their final test on Friday. ALL workbook homework assignments will be half of every type of problem. Students should complete all of the packets that are homework. Our LAST math groups will be at the normal time this week, Wednesday, 8:00-9:15.

Students will recite the poem “O Captain! My Captain!” on 5/1 and learn about the poem “A Bird Came Down the Walk”, to be recited during the week of 5/13.

In Literature, we will finish reading “Across Five Aprils”. Students should be mindful to keep up to date on their journal entries. Students will also be starting a newspaper project for the book. There will be ample class time to work on this, however students should also plan to work on it at home as well. More information will be coming home this week.

In Grammar, we postponed the End of Year Grammar Test to Wednesday, 5/1. We will review a little bit each day. Students will also be starting a creative writing unit. They will be writing their own Tall Tales. This week, we will work on analyzing Tall Tales, creating an introduction and main character, and the problem/solution and conclusion parts of their story. Next week, they will work on their illustrations and final drafts.

We will finish our study of the endocrine system this week. Students will receive their study guides Monday, and they will be due Friday. We will spend the week reviewing notes and playing games, with some time built in to work on the study guide to make sure students are not burdened with homework the night of the spring concert. The endocrine system test will be on Monday, May 6th.



This week in History we will continue our unit on Westward Expansion After the Civil War. Discussions will include the cattle frontier, farmers moving west, life on the plains, and acquisition of Alaska. This is a short unit, and students will receive their study guides on Tuesday. These will be due the following Tuesday, May 7th. A short test will be administered on Wednesday, May 8th.

In math, we will continue a unit on angles. This week, students will be measuring exterior and interior angles, finding the unknown angles in triangles, and finding the sum of angles in a quadrilateral. ALL workbook homework assignments will be half of every type of problem. Students should complete all of the packets that are homework. Math groups will be on Wednesday, 8:45-9:50 due to our Spring Concert rehearsal in the morning.

Updates and announcements

I hope everyone had a wonderful 4-day weekend! I am excited to have finished up 6 of my 7 classes over the weekend! It feels so good to have the extra time to sew and relax in the evenings.

We have a lot of exciting things coming up in our calendar! Be sure to keep an eye on the “Important Dates” section. We are back to our regular learning in addition to these fun and exciting events.

Students will learn about the roots rideo, laboro, and ergon. There will be a routine roots quiz over these next week.

Students will learn about the poem “O Captain! My Captain!” and recite it on 5/1.

In Literature, we will read through chapter 11 in “Across Five Aprils”. Students should be mindful to keep up to date on their journal entries.

In Grammar, we will learn about predicate nominatives (predicate nouns and pronouns) on Tuesday. We will review for the rest of the week and take our End of Year grammar test on Friday.

This week in science, we will continue our study of the endocrine system. On Thursday and Friday, students will learn about the effects the endocrine system will have on them as they learn about how humans grow and develop during puberty. Students will be in gender separated classrooms during these important lessons.  Please see the letter that went home with your child for additional information.  

This week in History we will begin our next unit: Westward Expansion After the Civil War. We will pick up with the gold rushes in the West, and different mining towns that popped up as a result. We also will learn about the first continental railroad, and the two companies, the Union Pacific Railroad, and the Central Pacific that built it.

In math, we will start a unit on angles. This week, students will be measuring angles and learning about the relationships between the addition of angles in a straight line and a circle. ALL workbook homework assignments will be half of every type of problem. Students should complete all of the packets that are homework. There will be no math groups this week as we have just started a unit.

Updates and announcements

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! We have just a couple days of AZMerit testing left. Please make sure your child goes to bed early tonight and Wednesday night, and eats a good breakfast on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Fifth grade is lucky in that we have a four day weekend after our last AZMerit test!
Tutoring is cancelled this week due to AZMerit testing.

If you are interested in chaperoning for the Capitol field trip on May 15th, please email me ASAP. I want to give priority to parents who did not get to chaperone the last field trip.

The Human Growth and Development letters went home last week. These are opt-out lessons. If you do not want your child to participate in these lessons, please send back the form signed. If you have any questions on the curriculum or would like to review it, I can help you set up an appointment with Mrs. Mason.

Students will learn about the roots fides, solus, and monos. There will be a routine roots quiz over these next week.

Students will learn about the poem “O Captain! My Captain!” and recite it on 5/1.

In Literature, we will read through chapter 10 in “Across Five Aprils”. Students should be mindful to keep up to date on their journal entries.

The AZMerit ELA tests will be on Tuesday, 4/16 and Thursday, 4/18. Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast.

Due to AZ Merit, this week will again will be light in science. Students will learn about the thyroid and the pancreas, as well as common diseases that affect those organs.

This week in History, students will review for and take the Unit 10 test on the American Civil War. Study guides are due on Monday, which will be our review day. Although Tuesday is reserved for AzMERIT, students that finish early will rotate through stations with facts about Jim Crow Laws that were in place after the Civil War. Our test will be on Wednesday.

In math, we will review for the AZMerit test, though with two tests this week, math work will be very light. ALL workbook homework assignments will be half of every type of problem. Students should complete all of the packets that are homework. We will have Math Groups most weeks until the end of the quarter. Math groups will be on Wednesday, 8:00-9:15.
