Updates and announcements

Happy week 7! Fifth grade has some exciting happenings every week until the end of the school year! Be sure to check out the “Important Dates” section of the blog.

The Spring Concert is on Wednesday. See you there!

Our week in learning

Students have learned all of the idioms in our curriculum! We may use this time to catch up on some that we missed.

Students will learn about the roots orthos and dokein. There will be a routine roots quiz over these next week.

Students will recite the poem “O Captain! My Captain!” on 5/1 and learn about the poem “A Bird Came Down the Walk”, to be recited during the week of 5/13.

In Literature, we will finish reading “Across Five Aprils”. Students should be mindful to keep up to date on their journal entries. Students will also be starting a newspaper project for the book. There will be ample class time to work on this, however students should also plan to work on it at home as well. More information will be coming home this week.

In Grammar, we postponed the End of Year Grammar Test to Wednesday, 5/1. We will review a little bit each day. Students will also be starting a creative writing unit. They will be writing their own Tall Tales. This week, we will work on analyzing Tall Tales, creating an introduction and main character, and the problem/solution and conclusion parts of their story. Next week, they will work on their illustrations and final drafts.

We will finish our study of the endocrine system this week. Students will receive their study guides Monday, and they will be due Friday. We will spend the week reviewing notes and playing games, with some time built in to work on the study guide to make sure students are not burdened with homework the night of the spring concert. The endocrine system test will be on Monday, May 6th.

This week in History we will continue our unit on Westward Expansion After the Civil War. Discussions will include the cattle frontier, farmers moving west, life on the plains, and acquisition of Alaska. This is a short unit, and students will receive their study guides on Tuesday. These will be due the following Tuesday, May 7th. A short test will be administered on Wednesday, May 8th.

In math, we will continue a unit on angles. This week, students will be measuring exterior and interior angles, finding the unknown angles in triangles, and finding the sum of angles in a quadrilateral. ALL workbook homework assignments will be half of every type of problem. Students should complete all of the packets that are homework. Math groups will be on Wednesday, 8:45-9:50 due to our Spring Concert rehearsal in the morning.
